The countries listed below have been offering government scholarships to Switzerland in the last few years. Most of the scholarship announcements for the academic year 2017/2018 will be published between September 2016 and March 2017. swissuniversities receives the scholarship offers directly from the foreign authorities, or the offers are published on the internet. The application deadline for 2017/2018 (USA 2018/2019) is only mentioned for those countries which have already announced their scholarship offers.

Countries not listed below (e.g. Great Britain, France, Canada) do not offer government scholarships to Switzerland. We recommend you to consult the section «Other funding opportunities».

Scholarship Offer

The scholarship fund is intended for scholars of Dutch and other academics, preferably attached to departments of Dutch at foreign universities. These academics conduct research relevant to the Dutch studies. The academics stay at a university within the Dutch-speaking region or outside this region if this is relevant for the research. In all cases the research should be carried out within the framework of a thesis or habilitation.

For a study period in the Netherlands and/or Flanders, a scholarship will be awarded for a maximum of six months. The scholarship level for a study period outside the Dutch-speaking region, will be determined separately for each application.

Croatia

The Ministry of Science, Education and Sports of the Republic of Croatia through the Agency for Mobility and EU Programmes offers scholarships to several countries, including Switzerland. Detailed information is available on the websites of the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports and the Agency for Mobility and EU Programmes.

The following two scholarship programmes are available for Swiss applicants:

  • A/1. One semester studies for students of Croatian Language abroad

Eligible applicants: undergraduate (BA/BSc) and graduate (MA/MSc) students, especially those majoring in Croatian Language and Literature, as well as graduate students working on their theses. Before application, students are required to have completed a minimum of two semesters at their home institutions

  •  F. Summer course 2016 (2 weeks) in Dubrovnik

The scholarship is granted for the 45th Croatian Seminar for Foreign Slavic Studies Students of the Zagreb School of Slavic Studies that will be held in Dubrovnik from 22nd August to 2nd September 2016.
Eligible  applicants: Foreign  students  of  Croatian  and  Slavic  Studies,  lecturers  (professors,  senior assistants  with  a  Ph.D.  and  teaching/research  assistants)  who  teach  Croatian  language  and literature  at  foreign  universities,  experts  who  specialize  in  Croatian  Studies  in  different  research institutions, as well as translators of the Croatian language.

Denmark

Scholarship Offer

Denmark offers a pool of scholarships to several countries, including Switzerland, on a competitive multilateral basis. Swiss students can apply for a scholarship under the Cultural Agreements programme to attend a Danish Summer Language Course. There are 293 scholarships available in 2017.

The summer language courses in Danish are open to bachelor, master's and PhD students. The courses offer foreign students Danish language instruction at all levels, while showcasing Denmark and Danish culture. They feature a minimum of 3 hours of language instruction a day accompanied by excursions and cultural activities.

The Danish Summer Language Courses last 3 weeks and are offered during the months of July and August 2017. The courses are offered by a number of different course providers, located in different regions of Denmark.

Remarks
  • Students can only apply for one course as their first priority. They will, however, be able to select a second choice, in case they cannot be placed in the course that they have picked as their first choice. Call for applications for foreig higher education students, graduates and professionals who would like to gain further knowledge in Hungarian summer university courses.

AGE LIMIT FOR APPLICANTS
For all types of state scholarships applicants must be over 18 at the time of submitting the application. There is no age limit.

APPLICATION
Applicants should submit their applications only in the online system of Tempus Public Foundation www.scholarship.hu. Applications submitted via post or e-mail will not be accepted. Before starting the online procedure please read our Online Application Guide carefully.

DOCUMENTS TO BE SUBMITTED
1. Application form of Tempus Public Foundation (downloadable from the online system). It is an electronic document only, and after signing it, it shall be uploaded scanned.
2. Complete professional CV in Hungarian or English – attached as a file
3. Letter of motivation – minimum 1, maximum 2 pages long
4. Transcript of records (original copy and its certified Hungarian or English translation)
  • University students: copy of the transcript of records of the last completed semester at the home        institution
  • Graduates: copy of the highest degree/diploma of higher education
5. Short description of the grading system (e.g. ‘30 points’ = excellent, etc.)
6. Proof of language proficiency (Hungarian and English) required for the summer university course. In case of Hungarian courses if the applicant has Hungarian knowledge it can be any type of Hungarian or English language exam certificate, or a formal certificate (in Hungarian or English) issued by the sending institution / workplace, foreign Hungarian institute or a Hungarian consul, marking the level of the knowledge. Without Hungarian knowledge: any kind of certificate of at least B2 English knowledge because in the courses the mediatory language is English.
7. A Letter of Recommendation issued by a teacher of the sending higher education institution/employer (with letterhead and signature)
8. Not more than a 3-month-old medical certificate issued by a GP of satisfactory health condition for studies (no contagious disease); (original copy and its authorized Hungarian or English translation). There is no template for it.
9. Copy of the picture page of ID card or passport.

Iceland

Name of ProgramIcelandic Government Scholarships in Icelandic Studies at the University of Iceland 2017-2018
Scholarship Offer

The Icelandic Ministry of Education, Science and Culture awards on a competitive multilateral basis scholarships to several countries - including Switzerland – for studies in Icelandic as a second language at the University of Iceland, Reykjavík.

Eligibility
The scholarships are intended for students of modern Icelandic. Students must have completed at least one year of University study. Students must also have prior knowledge of Icelandic according to the requirements for BA study in Icelandic as a second language (Icelandic knowledge on the level with the courses Icelandic Online 1 and 2). Preference will, as a rule, be given to a candidate under 35 years of age.

Scholarship
The scholarship covers registration fees at the University and a monthly stipend of approximately ISK 130.000 – that should cover room and board for one person, payable at the beginning of each month, September to April. A room will be available for rent in one of the University dormitory, Gamli Garður.

The Kendriya Hindi Sansthan, Agra is an autonomous organization of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India and is governed by the Central Board of Hindi Teaching (Kendriya Hindi Shikshan Mandal). Latvia

Name of ProgramThe Latvian Government Scholarships 2017/2018 for studies, research or summer schools

In accordance with bilateral agreements on co-operation in education and science, the State Education Development Agency (Valsts izglītības attīstības aģentūra – VIAA) offers scholarships to students and researchers and teaching staff of several countries, including Switzerland, for studies, research and participation in summer scholls in Latvian Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the academic year 2017/2018.

Latvian scholarships for studies
Language of instruction at Latvian HEIs is mainly Latvian, however there are a few study programmes offered in English (www.studyinlatvia.lv; list of HEIs).
Applications for bachelor`s and the first level of professional higher education studies will be accepted from students who have successfully completed at least one academic year of studies (at their home HEI or at a Latvian HEI if they already have been studying in Latvia) at the moment of application (February, March 2017).
Scholarships for bachelor's  and master's  studies are granted for one academic year – a time period up to 10 months (for PhD-students – up to 11 months).
Scholarship for master's  studies in the study programmes of Latvian philology, Latvian literature, Latvian culture and Latvian history can be granted for two academic years, i.e. for the duration of master's study programme.

Latvian Fellowships for research work
Only academic staff of foreign higher education and research institutions are eligible candidates for the Latvian state fellowship for research.
The fellowships are granted for a time period of up to 5 months.

Latvian scholarships for summer schools
Only students, academic and research staff of foreign HEIs are eligible for the Latvian scholarship for participation in summer schools.
The list of Summer schools in Latvia in 2017 will be published on the website of VIAA at the end of February.

As part of a reciprocal exchange, the government of Mexico, represented by the Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation (AMEXCID), offers 4 scholarships to Switzerland for undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate study and research.

Netherlands

Offer: The Romanian State offers trough the Ministry of Foreign Affairs 85 scholarships to foreign citizens for under- and post-graduate studies in Romania. Language of Study: In order to promote Romanian language and culture, the Ministry of National Education Scientific Research has decided that the beneficiaries of the scholarships should study only in the Romanian language.

The scholarships are granted for three levels of study:
a) for the first cycle (licenta): This scheme is dedicated to graduates of high schools or of equivalent pre-university studies, as well as to candidates who require the continuation of their studies in Romania. The complete cycle of university studies lasts for 3 to 6 years, according to the specific requirements of the chosen faculty, and ends with a final examination (licenta);

b) for the 2nd cycle (master): This scheme is dedicated to graduates of university/post-graduate studies; it lasts for 1,5 to 2 years and ends with a dissertation;

c) for the 3rd cycle (doctorate) this scheme is dedicated to the graduates of university/postgraduate studies (i.e. master); it lasts for 3-4 years, in keeping with the specific requirements of the chosen faculty, and ends with a doctor’s thesis. Admission to a PhD course is conditioned by an entrance examination.

Slovenia

Scholarship Offer

The Ministry of Education, Science and Sport of the Republic of Slovenia offers a number of scholarship months to foreign nationals, on the basis of bilateral agreement and reciprocity.
For the academic year 2017/2018 a total of 12 months is offered to Switzerland.

The scholarships scheme is designed for university/college students or graduates and Ph.D. applicants who wish to accomplish a part of their study at one of the Slovenian institution of higher education (in Slovenian language). A part of postgraduate study is based on individual works under the supervision of Slovenian professor/mentor.

The scholarship cannot be awarded for a complete course of study leading to a degree. Neither can the scholarship be granted for any Slovenian language course.

Turkey

Scholarship OfferApplications are exclusively intended for candidates from all over the world who want to pursue master and PhD studies in Türkiye. (Applications for undergraduate programs will be opened at a later date.)

Eligibility:
  • Candidates are required to meet the qualifications (GRE, GMAT, TOEFL, DELF, YDS, ALES, etc.) set by the universities and departments that can be selected through the application system. Candidates who do not have the required documents will not be considered for the scholarship.
  • Candidates who will apply for a master’s degree must be born not earlier than 01.01.1987, whereas candidates for PhD degree must be born not earlier than 01.01.1982.
  • Candidates who will apply for Türkiye Scholarships must have graduated from an appropriate program with respect to the scholarship level they are applying for (e.g. have a university diploma if applying for a master program, or hold a master’s degree if applying for a PhD program), or be able to graduate at the end of the current academic year.

Name of ProgramSummer scholarships for a study trip in Turkey from 23 August to 1 September 2016
Scholarship Offer

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey will offer short summer scholarships for a study trip for successful and motivated graduate students (MA, MPhil, PhD, etc.) interested in Ottoman and Turkish studies.
The aim of the project is to provide wide-ranging first-hand information on Turkey, its culture, history and politics; and to promote social and academic exchanges among the participants and their Turkish counterparts.

Eligibility:
Applicants to the study trip must be graduate students in Turcology, History, Political Science, International Relations, Sociology, Journalism, Law or Public Administration.

Modalities:

  • All travel and accommodation expenses of the study trip will be covered by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
  • The programme will include 30 participants. 
  • The programme, excursions and discussions will be in English.
  • Participants of the study trip will be required to arrive in Turkey on 23 August 2016 and fully participate in the programme that ends on 1 September 2016 (Draft programme see announcement below).
  • Following the visit, participants will be requested to provide an evaluation paper by 26 September 2016 on the programme and their perception of Turkey.

Name of ProgramTürkiye Scholarships: Research Fellowship Programme 2016
Scholarship Offer

Türkiye Scholarships has launched the Research Fellowship Programme with an aim to encourage international researchers and academics to work with Turkish academics on collaborative researches in Turkey and contribute to the development of the international scientific interaction between researchers.

Research areas are limited to social sciences and humanities subjects announced by Türkiye Scholarships and applicants are required to state the specific research topic in the application.

Scientific competence of the applicant, scientific/academic value of the research proposal and its feasibility are taken into consideration in the evaluation process. Also, the proposed research's contribution to applicant's career development, his/her country and host institution are evaluated.

Phd holders or Phd candidates under the age of 45 who are citizens of countries other than Turkey may apply to the Research Grant Programme. Candidates must have completed their PhD studies or be at the dissertation stage. Also, it is essential that candidates have an official acceptance letter from a university in Turkey for research.

The monthly grant for the year 2016 is 3.000 TL (almost 1,000$). The fellowship does not include costs such as accommodation, insurance and tuition fee. If deemed appropriate by the Research Fellowship Evaluation Committee, researcher's academic activities (conferences, panels, symposiums, survey, field research, etc.) may be supported.
The Research Fellowship Programme is for a  maximum of 12 months. Grants will only be paid for the months the researchers stay in Turkey during the research period.

The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. Government, designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.
The Fulbright Foreign Student Program in Switzerland offers funding to highly qualified Swiss students for pursuing study at the master’s or Ph.D. level at any recognized institution of higher education in the United States.

Type of grants
Up to eight grants of up to $20,000 each to pursue a Master’s or Ph.D. degree; non‐degree coursework; or Ph.D. research at any recognized U.S. institution of higher education.
Exceptions: Applications for studies in medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, and clinical psychology are ineligible; however, the Master’s degree in Public Health is eligible. Grants are four to ten months in length and not renewable. They are to be used toward the cost of tuition and other academic expenses. The final number and amount of grants awarded is dependent on the availability of funds.

Eligibility requirements

  • Swiss citizenship (If you hold another citizenship you must contact the Fulbright Commission or U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Section in your citizenship country.)
  • Undergraduate degree from a University or University of Applied Sciences completed by fall 2017.
  • English proficiency with a TOEFL Internet‐based iBT score of 100 or higher.

    In the following cases, you are not eligible to apply:

    • You hold dual citizenship with the United States, are a resident of the United States, or hold a "green card".
    • You will not have completed a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) by fall 2017.
    • You plan to start your U.S. studies earlier than the fall semester of 2018.
    • You have already obtained a Ph.D. degree, or are expecting to obtain a Ph.D. degree before fall 2018.
    • You intend to pursue an internship, residency, or research at a U.S. school of medicine or dentistry.
    • You are currently studying, researching, or lecturing at a U.S. university.
    • You are currently living or working in the United States.

    The Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program is a non-degree, post-doctoral award program for researchers, university lecturers and experts from academic institutions in Switzerland who wish to conduct post-doctoral research, lecture, or pursue combined lecturing and research in the United States.
    All candidates must currently be affiliated with one of the universities or research institutions in Switzerland. Grants are available for the period between August 2018 and July 2019 for periods of a minimum of three months to ten months.

    One to two grants are available for research and/or teaching in all fields at any recognized institution of higher education in the United States. Award benefits vary according to the individual program details, but all include a monthly stipend, a one-time settling-in allowance, a one-time professional allowance and limited accident and medical coverage provided by the Department of State.

    Eligibility Requirements

    • Swiss citizenship (If you hold another citizenship you must contact the Fulbright Commission or U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Section in your citizenship country.)
    • Doctoral degree or equivalent professional training or experience at the time of application. For professionals and artists outside academe, recognized professional standing and substantial professional accomplishment is expected.
    • A detailed project statement or proposed activity at a U.S. institution
    • English proficiency appropriate to the proposed teaching and/or research project to be carried out in the United States.

    In the following cases, you are not eligible to apply:

    • You hold dual citizenship with the United States, are a resident of the United States, or hold a "green card".
    • You have NOT obtained a Ph.D. degree, or are expecting to obtain a Ph.D. degree, before fall 2018.
    • You have recent U.S. experience (more than an aggregate period of 9 months in the United States during the past 5 years)
    • You are currently studying, researching, or lecturing at a U.S. university.
    • You are currently living or working in the United States.

    Candidates are encouraged to submit evidence that they have identified a host affiliation in the United States as part of the application process, well before an actual grant is awarded.

    Dr. Heinrich Medicus, a retired Swiss professor from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Albany) made a permanent gift of stock to the Swiss Benevolent Society of New York (SBS) to establish a student exchange program between Switzerland and the United States for qualified students.

    Medicus grants
    2 - 5 partial grants up to US$ 5,000 each to be used toward the cost of tuition and other academic expenses. Grant lengths range from three months to one academic year, and are not renewable.

    Remarks

    The application procedure for the Medicus Student Exchange Program is the same as for the Fulbright Foreign Student Program. swissuniversities also uses the Fulbright application forms for the Medicus grants.     Applicants for a Medicus grant must apply individually for university admission. To be definitely eligible for the grant, the selected candidates must have obtained an official letter of admission by the admissions’ office of the host university.
