Gebert Rüf Stiftung launched in 2009 the programme BREF ‘bridging projects’ in cooperation with the former Rectors' Conference of the Swiss Universities of Applied Sciences KFH. Since January 2015, the programme has been pursued in collaboration with swissuniversities.
The programme BREF has an annual budget of some CHF 1.5 million. At the center of interest is the potential of universities of applied science as R&D partners. The calls for projects are aimed at members of universities of applied sciences who develop strong ideas that can also serve as models for new and promising cooperation ventures with partners from business and society (bridging projects).
The programme issues its annual calls for projects in January, the closing date for submissions is in summer, and decisions on grants are made in autumn. Until 2016, eight calls were launched; five of them focused on social innovation. For 2018 a new focus is going to be selected.
