Bologna reform/ECTS

European Credit Transfer System (ECTS)

The ECTS was designed as a Europe-wide harmonised credit system and implemented as one of the main requirements for a transparent and flexible system of European higher education. The ECTS Users’ Guide provides guidelines for implementing the ECTS.

In 2003, CRUS issued comprehensive «Recommendations for the application of the ECTS at academic universities in Switzerland» (updated in 2004), in which the general aspects of the European regulations and their application to the Swiss situation are presented and discussed in detail.

Calculating credits for skills obtained elsewhere

In general, the calculation is the responsibility of the universities. It should primarily be carried out using proven skills and not on the basis of formal criteria (comparison of credits).
