swissuniversities and Wiley sign transformative Open Access agreement

swissuniversities has concluded a new Read&Publish agreement with John Wiley & Sons. It will provide students and researchers from over 40 Swiss higher education and research institutions access to the Wiley Online Library with over 1’450 journals. At the same time, this agreement enables authors affiliated to these institutions to make their scientific articles published in the hybrid journals openly accessible immediately upon publication.

"swissuniversities is delighted to have achieved our goal to conclude transformative agreements with the three largest academic publishers. This sends a strong signal to other scholarly publishers that cost-neutral OA agreements are possible and viable for the future," says Yves Flückiger, president of swissuniversities and head of the negotiating team.

The agreement came into force on 1 January 2021 and is valid until 31 December 2024. From 1 May 2021, authors affiliated to swissuniversities member institutions and further institutional clients of the Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries will be able to publish their accepted research papers fully and immediately in Open Access in Wiley's nearly 1’400 hybrid journals under the Swiss agreement. In addition, this agreement provides full reading rights and permanent access to Wiley's journal portfolio for all researchers and students from the participating institutions.

swissuniversities adopted the national Open Access Strategy and the Open Access Action Plan in February 2018 with the aim of making all publicly funded publications available in Open Access by 2024. The four-year contract with Wiley is a significant step in this direction. A prerequisite for reaching this goal it that agreements with academic publishers are in place that allow authors affiliated with Swiss universities and institutions of higher education to publish their work (e.g., journal articles, book parts and monographs) in Open Access. With the successful conclusion of negotiations with the three major publishers Elsevier (May 2020), Springer Nature (July 2020) and Wiley, swissuniversities has now implemented the Read&Publish model, which both includes reading access to academic journals and covers the Open Access publication of higher education institutions, with the three largest publishers.

The agreement will be available on the homepage of the Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries www.consortium.ch after a 30-day embargo. Further details on the scope of the agreement can be found at https://authorservices.wiley.com/author-resources/Journal-Authors/open-access/affiliation-policies-payments/csal-agreement.html.

The negotiating parties also concluded a favourable agreement for the Cochrane Library. The Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences (SAMS/ASSM) continues to be the patron of this product.
