swissuniversities has published the data from the 2024 gender monitoring. The results show that the increase of women professors is continuing, as observed in recent years. In 2024, 46% of appointments at the professorial level were women (one percentage point less than last year). On 31 December 2024 (reference date), women made up 31% of the total professorial staff, which represents a 1 percentage point increase compared to the previous year.
Important differences between academic fields are still observed. For example, the humanities and social sciences remain constant as the field with the highest proportion of women (44% of total staff and 58% of new appointments). An increase of 6 percentage point is observed in the number of women hired as professors in the field of law (reaching a proportion of 54%). The fields of technical sciences and natural and exact sciences show a lower overall proportion of women (26% and 24% respectively for technical sciences and for natural and exact sciences), but at the same time the proportion of women hired in 2022-2024 is significantly higher (49% and 44% respectively).
More than half of assistant professorships with tenure track positions are held by women (53% of total staff). This points to a potential increase in the percentage of women at higher academic levels in the coming years. Currently, the proportion of women among full professors remains low at 24% (1 percentage point increase compared to the previous year).
