swissuniversities has published the data from the 2023 Gendermonitoring. The results show that the number of women professors is still increasing as observed in recent years. In 2023, 47% of appointments at the professorial level were women. As of the reference date, 31 December 2023, women made up 30% of the total professorial staff, which represents a 2 percentage point increase compared to the previous year.
There are significant differences between academic fields. For example, the humanities and social sciences are consolidating their position as the field with the highest proportion of women (43% of total staff and 63% of new appointments between 2021-2023). The technical sciences show a lower overall proportion of women (25%), but at the same time the proportion of women hired in 2021-2023 is significantly higher (54%).
Women hold half of the assistant professorships with tenure track (51% of total staff). This points to a potential increase in the percentage of women at higher academic levels in the coming years. Currently, the proportion of women among full professors remains low at 23%.
