FROM THE OPEN SCIENCE PROGRAMME

Federal project contributions (PgB): Information on the Open Science II programme (2025-2028)

In December 2023, swissuniversities submitted the programme proposal for the PgB Open Science II to the Swiss Conference of Higher Education Institutions (SHK / CSHE). In terms of content, the proposed Open Science II programme continues the work of its predecessor, Open Science I. It aims to further consolidate and strategically develop Open Science in Swiss Higher Education Institutions and research communities. It focusses on three dimensions: Open Access to Scientific Publications (OA), Open Research Data (ORD) and other innovative areas of Open Science.

Federal funding of CHF 30 million has been requested for the Open Science II programme. The application, which still has to be approved by the Swiss Conference of Higher Education Institutions (SHK / CSHE), is already available in both German and French on the swissuniversities website. Information is also available on the four other PgB programmes that have been applied for as part of the ERI Dispatch for the period 2025-2028.

Preliminary information on the calls for proposals for the new Open Science Programme is expected to be published in the second half of 2024.

24 April 2024, Open Access Alliance

The next meeting of the Open Access Alliance will take place on Wednesday, 24 April 2024, from 14:15 to 16:45 in Bern. All interested parties are welcome.

Most of the meeting will be dedicated to a discussion of the PgB Open Science II. In December 2023, swissuniversities submitted a proposal to the Swiss Conference of Higher Education Institutions to continue the work of the predecessor programme Open Science I; the OS II programme aims at a sustainable consolidation and strategic development of Open Science in Swiss higher education institutions and research communities.

At the OAA meeting, swissuniversities will inform about key aspects of the proposed programme regarding Open Access as well as its relationship to the revised National Open Access Strategy. Attendees will then participate in discussion workshops on possible ways to implement the OS II programme. Given the wide focus of this meeting, all current OA project leaders or representatives from all OA projects as well as further interested parties are invited to attend.

In order to register for the OAA meeting and to receive the agenda, please contact open-science@clutterswissuniversities.ch.

19 June 2024, Webinar: When Green meets Diamond Open Access

Green Open Access and Diamond Open Access refer to different models of scholarly open access publishing which at first glance do not share many connections. However, they could be seen as strong partners in aiming for a more sustainable and affordable scholarly communication system.

In this webinar, we aim at exploring the links, perceptions, and challenges of both Green and Diamond Open Access and the question of how we can seize opportunities and synergies in our goals to enhance non-commercial open access publishing. The discussion will therefore touch upon issues such as institutional publishing infrastructures, rights retention, and international connectivity.

This webinar is a joint venture between the project «GOAL – Unlocking the Green Open Access Potential» and the project «PLATO – Platinum Open Access Funding» – both co-funded by swissuniversities.

Inputs by Enrique Corredera Nilsson (GOAL) and Daniela Hahn (PLATO). Moderation: Thomas Leibundgut (swissuniversities)

When: 19 June, 12.45pm-1.45pm, online via MS Teams, register here.

31 May 2024: Public event on "Open Research Data – are we on track?

The aim of Open Research Data (ORD) is to make scientific data available in a transparent way as well as for reproducibility and reuse purposes. Switzerland published its ORD Strategy in 2021, and an Action Plan in 2022. With the experience gained so far, it is time to reflect on these developments: How well is ORD accepted, implemented and applied? What intended benefits could have been realised so far? Are risks and challenges well accounted for? The conference is organized by the Swiss Academy of Science, the programme can be found here: https://scnat.ch/en/id/HLMB9
